PILGRIM’S PROGRESS

November 2002

Parson to Persons: Resuming Speed

As you can see, I can now "see," and I have resumed speed, and am back to work full time. My first Sunday was October 13th, and it is indeed very good to be back! My eye is healing very well from the retinal surgery I had on September 5th, and though at this writing I still have a small gas bubble at the bottom of my line of vision, it is expected to continue to decrease and be gone very soon.

Everyone pitched in during my absence, and I came back to what appears to be a very healthy church. My special thanks to Pat Wiedner, our church administrator, for her help in keeping things going, as well as to the rest of our very capable staff. Again, I thank you one and all for your support and prayers during the last two months.

Besides my return after an absence of 4 ½ months, there is another staff change that I need to report to you. After a most successful ministry here as Church School Superintendent for the past six years, Geri Holden is stepping down from that position on October 31st. Geri’s deep love and care for our children and her incredible creativity have been the hallmarks of her ministry among us, and she will be greatly missed. As you will see elsewhere in this issue, the Board of Christian Education has quickly picked

up the ball, and our fine Church School program continues as strong as ever. But, any help you can give to Nancy Martin and her Board will be greatly appreciated. The Strategic Planning Committee is looking at our staffing needs and will be making a recommendation to the Church Council soon.

The Genesis Bible study groups (Wednesday mornings and evenings) have begun, with some new participants, and much enthusiasm. If you have an interest, give me a call, or just show up on Wednesday. You will be warmly welcomed.

I was excited to hear that we have had many new folks visiting us this Fall, and some have already expressed an interest in joining the church. I am trying to get around to visit as many as possible. Our next New Members Class will be this month on Saturday, Nov. 16th from 9:00am to about 12:30 noon. I will be sending out letters of invitation, but if you do not receive one and are interested, please do call me.

Once again we are off to an incredibly busy Fall in our personal lives and here at Pilgrim Church. Resuming speed is not always positive; sometimes it can be very stressful. In addition, events in our country and in places around the globe trouble many of us. Our post-9/11 world continues to be very complex. Worship on Sunday mornings and on alternate Saturday evenings offer opportunities for reflection, celebration, and spiritual healing. Please join us.

Shalom,

Ken

We will again be offering bags of mammoth halves for $7.50 and medium sized pieces for $6.50. If you’d like to reserve your pecans in advance please call Sharon McKinley @ (781) 934-8944. The pecans will be sold in the Vestry after services once they are available.

Christmas Cards

The Women’s Fellowship is selling beautiful Christmas cards of the sanctuary in the Vestry during coffee hour every Sunday. These make beautiful hostess gifts and are perfect for thank-you notes! Please stop by and take a look!.

This time of year offers many opportunities for special music. On October 13th, Carol Cybulska and her sisters, Diane Stillman and Marjorie Hunt sang Mendelssohn’s "Lift thine Eyes". I am sure all that heard them will agree that it was stunningly beautiful. These young women give frequent concerts and it was a privilege for us to have them participate in our Sunday worship. On October 20th, three jazz musicians from the South Shore Conservatory provided exciting accompaniment to the Senior Choir Anthems and the Prelude. The Bell Choir provided beautiful renditions of the Prelude and an Anthem. Our Senior Choir is already preparing music for Thanksgiving Sunday. We are also planning an anthem to include all 3 of our choirs for that special day! David Baxter will provide prelude and postlude music as well as accompanying the anthems and hymns.

The Senior Choir is already preparing music for the season of Advent and Christmas. Our music program is steadily growing and we thank the Lord for this blessing. We are always happy to welcome new members to any of the choirs. Debby Jewell is organizing a choir of young people to sing occasionally. This is a wonderful endeavor and we hope to hear them sing soon. We have many talented people in our congregation and we want to encourage you to join any of the choirs that interest you. Please do not be shy about approaching or calling, if you have questions or suggestions. We have welcomed the return of Greg Hunter to the Bass section we are delighted to have you back, Greg. We are sorry to have to say goodbye for now to Flora Logie as she and her husband, Jim return to Maryland. We look forward to her return in the spring. Of course, we are all so happy to have our pastor back. His return was especially welcomed by the tenor section!

Cathy

The flower arrangers for this month are Julia Lizza and Barbara Kelley.

There will be three Saturday Evening Services in November! We will gather for worship at 5pm on November 2nd to Honor Our Saints with a service that will be filled with jazz! Come hear some favorite standards and maybe even a little improvisation. Invite a neighbor or friend to join you! We will have refreshments following this service in the vestry. We also will gather on November 16th and 30th.

Get in the Holiday Spirit!!!

From the Board of Christian Outreach

In an effort to encourage volunteerism and promote the good works of many local charities, we will be offering the congregation chances to participate in a variety of community service events throughout the year. This will give our members who wish to participate the opportunity to give of their time and talents.

The first of these such events will be the second annual Brittany Lambert Foundation Christmas Tree Sale, which will be held at Fran Doran’s building at 33 Enterprise Street December 5th – 8th. All proceeds from the sale will go to the Foundation, a Duxbury based charity that assists Massachusetts families whose children are battling life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Specifically, the Foundation has asked for our help with unloading Christmas trees and wreaths and setting up the lot. They are in need of 10 volunteers for the late afternoon and early evening on Wednesday, December 4th & Friday, December 8th (5 for each day). Personnel from the Foundation will be present to coordinate and help with this event. What a great way to kick off the Holiday season and make a difference at the same time! Exact times will be available shortly. If you would like to help, please sign up on the bulletin boards outside the vestry and downstairs, or contact Tracy (934-6591) in the church office.

In addition, the Foundation will be selling donated baked goods and crafts throughout the weekend. If you can contribute a dozen of your best brownies or a few handmade ornaments to sell, contact Tracy (934-6591) for information on where and when to drop them off! They will be greatly appreciated! The Board of Outreach hopes the congregation will take advantage of this and any future events to make a difference in our community. If you have an idea for such an event, or a favorite local charity you’d like to see us help, please contact Gretchen Frey (934-6622) or a member of the Board of Christian Outreach.

Holiday Progressive Dinner - Saturday, December 14

If you have been before, you know this is a great adult fellowship event. If you haven’t been before, you really should come! We begin the evening gathering in one or two homes for delicious hors d’oeuvres. We then break into small, pre-assigned groups of 8-10 for dinner at church members’ homes. The evening ends with a dessert gathering at a single home, where one of the highlights is the group singing of the 12 Days of Christmas – very silly and lots of fun. All attending contribute to the evening’s success by helping with either hosting a course or preparing an hors d’oeuvre, salad and main course, or dessert. Save the date! Sign-up sheets will be posted on the bulletin board and available in the vestry after church beginning November 17th!

COME JAM* WITH US!

The JAM* (Jesus And Me) club has started meeting again! JAM combines church school curriculum with lots of fun for children in grades K-6. To learn more contact Joan Barrington @ 934-8914. Advent Craft Workshop

November begins our preparations for Advent! Saturday, Nov. 30th will be our annual Children’s Advent Craft Workshop. This is for children ages 5 through 12 and is held in two classrooms upstairs from 1:00 – 4:30. The cost for the workshop is $5.00 a child. Following the workshop families are invited to stay for a soup and sandwich supper before attending the Alternative Saturday Service. This works out great as parents are coming to pick up their children, families can have supper together and then enjoy the Saturday Service! A pleasant way to welcome Advent. Sign up will be in the vestry and also downstairs.

Advent Wreath Kits

All the supplies you need to create an advent wreath for your home worship! Included in the kit is oasis, container, candles, boxwood and Advent Liturgy. The cost is $10.00 and these will be available for pick up on Nov. 30th and Dec. 1st. Sign up in the vestry and downstairs.

Christmas Pageant Sign Up

All church school children are welcomed to join in the reenactment of the Christmas Story. The pageant is held on Christmas Eve at 4:00 PM. We need many shepherds, angels, animals and kings. Rehearsals will be held on December 1st, 8th, and 15th in the Sanctuary following church school. Children need to attend at least 2 rehearsals, so please make sure that they will be able to. On the 24th they need to be at church by 3:00. Sign up sheets will be given out in the classrooms in November and need to be turned in to the church school office on Sunday mornings.

Reminder

There will be no church school on November 10th and November 24th. These are "All in Church Sundays", with nursery and 3 & 4 year old class only.

To all members of our Pilgrim Church family,

It is with deep regret that I am resigning from being your

Church School Superintendent. I have enjoyed being with

all our beautiful children and seeing them grow in spirit and

in size! The friendships I have made with children, teachers

and CE members through the years will always be special to

me. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to have served

you and your children, for I have truly been blessed by all

of you.

Faithfully yours,

Geri Holden

From The Board of Christian Education

We will all miss Geri Holden when she departs from her position as Church School Superintendent on October 31st. We truly need to all band together to help make all our holiday traditions still take place. Anyone willing to help create, assist, purchase, etc. would be greatly appreciated. Even if you can only donate a small amount of time please come to help! Contact Nancy Martin (585-6652) or see the sign-up sheet in the Vestry for ways you can help. Thank You!

Kids Klub for 5th & 6th graders and JYF for 7th and 8th graders will once again be participating in our now famous "canned good scavenger hunt" We plan routes and need parents to drive while the youth "scavenge" for canned and boxed food items. (NO glass please!) We count up the total items and donate them to the Interfaith Council Gift Baskets. Prizes are definitely awarded to the winners! See you on November 3rd from 4-5:30pm. Sign up in the vestry now.

JYF will also meet Sunday, November 17 from 4-5:30 for a Bake-off. Please bring something to bake, all the ingredients and a pan or whatever utensils you will need. These goodies will be placed into the Thanksgiving baskets also.

On a personal note, on Nov. 18th I will be participating in Andover Newton’s requirement of a mid-program review. Having completed over half of the 90 credits for a Masters of Divinity, I will be meeting with my Andover Newton advisor, Pilgrim Assoc. advisor, student peer and an appointed chairperson to review my progress and plan for the balance of my class work, including Field Education and Clinical Pastoral Education placements. Although this is a positive and encouraging process, you might imagine that there is some anxiety surrounding preparing for this review. I would appreciate being held in your thoughts and prayers especially at this time. As always I am fortunate to be blessed by such a supportive and caring church family. Thank you! Peggy
