Parson to Persons: Endings and Beginnings
As summer slowly draws to a close, vacations end, children get ready to go back to school, and families gear up for the various autumn rituals, we sense the ebb and flow of endings and beginnings. So too in the life of our church family. With Rally Sunday just around the corner (Sept. 7th at 10:00am), church school beginning, and other activities starting up, this really is the time of year of new beginnings.
It will be good to be back with you on Rally Sunday. My sabbatical and vacation time has been productive (books read, periodicals perused, Bible study preparations made, conferences attended, and worship times experienced) and renewing (good "down time" with family, biking, the beach, a Red Sox game, some travel), tinged with sadness at an ending in my own family. My mother, Psyche Douglas, in declining health especially this past year, slowly slipped away on August 2nd, after giving my sister, her family, and I time to say our good-byes and "I love you’s." She is now at rest and embarking on her own new beginnings. Thank you to all of you for your kind expressions of sympathy. They have been most sincerely appreciated. God bless you all!
The Pilgrim Church Staff (including four new or "almost new" folks) will be holding its annual planning retreat on Tuesday Sept. 2nd at our home in Harwich, where I have spent most of the summer. It will be a chance to bond together as a team, get to know one another a little better, and look at the challenges and opportunities that are unfolding at Pilgrim Church in the coming year (including the big Amistad event coming up in Boston on Oct. 25th). Tracy Drew, our Secretary for the past two years, will not be with us, having recently started an exciting new full time position in the print media field. Thanks for all your good work, and best to you, Tracy! Our new secretary, Cathy Doughty has already begun – welcome Cathy! I look
forward to seeing you all on Rally Sunday, and continuing with you in our mutual ministry. It will surely be another exciting year!Shalom,
Ken

A FEW BYTES FROM BEV
It is good to be among you as your new Pastoral Associate. Since Winifred Jones was well loved and known in this community, you have heard me introduce myself as "the new Winifred Jones." In actuality, there will always be only one Winifred Jones, and I can only hope to fill a need as well as she did as a member of your staff for ten years.
I will be visiting many of you in the seasons to come. Some visits will be of the staying-in-touch or getting-to-know you variety. Other visits will be more for providing the comfort only the church can bring in times of stress, disability, illness, or grief.
In all cases, prayer is always appropriate during any visit, if you would like it. Don’t hesitate to ask. If you would like copies of sermons and/or Communion, please let me know.
Finally, I typically call you to set up my visits, but if you’d like a visit and you haven’t heard from me lately, call the church office and Pat will pass the message along to me.
I look forward to seeing new friends and newer friends as our new church year gets underway. Peace and blessings to you all.
Bev Latif Duncan

Volunteer Coordinator’s Update
As promised, my focus this summer has been on learning – reading, listening, and setting up some pilot programs so we can learn from Pilgrim’s own experience. One article I read was titled "The Four Needs: What People Are Looking for in a Church" (In the leaders’ and participants’ manuals for Discovering God’s Vision for Your Life: You and Your Spiritual Gifts.) The four needs identified are: spirituality, community, care and ministering. Ministering is the way individual members of the church share their gratitude and love for God and use their own gifts to help the church meet the spirituality, community and care needs of others.
The calls I’ve already received from you and the brainstorming sessions I’ve attended with the Outreach Committee suggesting new ways you would like to minister have been rich with ideas; ideas which are very consistent with the article. For example, church members are anxious to begin a new couple’s Bible study group, new fellowship groups and a new mother’s support group, and to find new ways to help existing service organizations in our community. The Outreach Committee seeks ways to provide opportunities to involve more church members, which will also enable them to expand their care programs (be sure to look at the Outreach article in this issue of Pilgrim’s Progress). I visited with a church this summer whose members have identified 110 opportunities for ministry!
Your calls and the old Strategic Planning and "Time and Talent" surveys I have reviewed are also consistent with my reading. You have said you love the spirituality, the community and the care Pilgrim Church provides for you. You are very willing to help Pilgrim Church do an even better job of providing these to others. In addition to helping to ensure new opportunities to serve are available, and documenting those opportunities, my role is to help you find personally rewarding ways to minister, ways that use your unique set of God-given gifts and talents. We are going to pilot a program this fall called Discovering God’s Vision for Your Life: You and Your Spiritual Gifts, which is designed to help individuals identify these God-given gifts. By the time you read this article, the Seekers Group should have begun the first pilot program. I also hope the program will be the core for the Women’s Retreat planned for the first weekend in October. If these pilots are as successful as I anticipate, we expect to offer future programs both to other groups and open to all individuals in the congregation.
I’ll keep you posted.
Faithfully,
Lynne Devnew Wolfe

Inspire your soul, awaken your senses, and fill your heart.
The atmosphere is casual, but the worship is serious.
We are looking forward to beginning our third year of offering an additional worship service at 5pm on Saturday evening as an alternative to Sunday morning. The setting and liturgy is familiar but our Message Team plans to share the Word through scripture, drama, and readings. Our professional Music Team includes keyboard, drums, bass and guitar and provides meaningful contemporary rock as a Saturday service staple. We also invite many of our young adults to attend and participate as often as possible. If you would like to know more or participate please contact Peggy O’Neil Files through the church office. We look forward to welcoming back those who have joined us already and encourage everyone to bring a friend or neighbor for the first time as we all grow in the spirit of Christ’s Word, love and fellowship.

PWF RETREAT
The Pilgrim Women’s Fellowship Retreat at the Craigville Conference Center is October 3-4. Lynne Wolfe will be conducting a workshop, Discovering God’s Vision for Your Life: You and Your Spiritual Gifts. Since the house we reserved is smaller than in previous years, the number attending is limited to twelve, possibly fourteen people. If you are really interested, we urge you to sign up as soon as possible with your check for $67, payable to Pilgrim Women’s Fellowship. There is also a charge of $15.90 for the individual manuals. FROM PCCP….
Welcoming a new school year with a superior and talented staff and creative curriculum is always a treat. The new staff include Gail Durant of Kingston and Kathy Connelly of Norwell, each a certified teacher and dedicated to the care of young children. Field trips to apple farm, parent’s night and nature walks will be part of our fall events. We welcome waitlist applicants at any time. For a tour contact the Director @ 934-8145, ext. #1. Thank you, Michelle Manganaro

Soccer Moms
Fall TryoutAs the sports seasons beckon our children and their chauffeurs, take advantage of this opportunity to stay in shape spiritually. Conceptually, the mission of this group of parents will be twofold: 1) to participate in some type of religious study/fellowship/worship on an adult level, as well as 2) attend to the christian education of our children who are not attending church school regularly due to conflicts with sports or other activities on Sunday mornings. If you find yourself and your young athlete are constantly missing church on Sunday mornings, then this group is for YOU! Come to this organizational meeting and voice your needs, desires, and ideas. BRING YOUR CALENDAR! Football Moms, Hockey Moms, Cheerleading Moms, Swimming Moms, Music Moms, and ALL DADs are welcome, too. Please contact Joan Barrington (bears59@adelphia.net) or Eloise Parks in the church office, if you are interested in being part of Pilgrim Church's newest team.

SUMMER MUSIC NEWS
My summer vacation was spent on a trip with family and then a visit with Keith and Maridel Johnson in their new home in Bellingham, Washington. As I write this, it seems unreal that our summer is nearly over and it is time to begin fall plans.
Fall is my favorite time of year. It has always seemed to me to be the beginning of the new year and that is always exciting! August 20th will be spent in Newport, Rhode Island attending a day long seminar on choral conducting. This is sponsored by the Rhode Island chapter of the American Choral Directors Assoc., of which I am a member. The senior choir and, ultimately, you in the congregation will benefit from my attendance, I am sure.
The first rehearsal for the Senior Choir will be held on Thursday, September 4th @ 7:30 in the choir room. We will first sing for this new year on Rally Sunday, September 7th so this rehearsal is very important. Along with our musical preparation, we will exchange
stories of our summer events and generally get back in touch.
Please save the date, November 23rd (time to be announced). Our choir, supplemented by
members of the community, will present a "Messiah Sing" accompanied by organ and a small orchestra. The congregation will be encouraged to join in the singing of the choruses if they wish. If you have never attended one of these popular concerts, you are in for an afternoon of fun and inspiration.

Junior Choir Opens New Season With Kodaly Music
Ruth Barnes Reed, Jr. Choir Director
Much has been written about the importance of music in our daily lives. Yet fewer and fewer children learn even basic music skills, much less have the opportunity to use these skills in their lives regularly. It is a proven fact that reading and writing music improves listening skills, sequencing, self-confidence, breathing. How could it be that such great medicine is so much fun to take?
Using the Kodaly Music Method, members work toward better intonation, rhythm, sequencing, diction, correct breathing, and much more. Beginning with familiar songs, they learn heartbeat, rhythm, intonation, and basic musicology through their voices and rhythm instruments. They also have the opportunity to learn more about our church’s music traditions including hymns, introits, responses, and chants. This is simply not possible during a 30-minute preparation time on Sunday mornings. This year those who come early will have an opportunity to practice musical skills on a keyboard, as well.
This season promises to be even more exciting. We have added more rhythm instruments and a new keyboard to assist children in learning more about music and assist in their singing, ringing, and other instruments. We meet very Wednesday between 4:15 and 5:30 PM and sing two Sundays a month, on average. This is a unique opportunity for our church’s young people. It enables them to give of their talents, to grow personally, and proudly participate in their own church chorus. Choristers who have sung with the choir for a season, and are at least 11 years old are eligible to become Junior Directors. They help the director with music, robes, snacks, and direct rounds and canons, when they are ready to do so. Junior Directors also wear stoles different from regular choir members and receive special awards.
If you have a child who might be interested, or know of one, please contact us. We will be glad to talk with them, offer words of encouragement. All interested children are encouraged to come to the first rehearsal, just to try it out. We hope all choristers will be able to make most rehearsals throughout the year. If, however, obligations later in the year make it difficult to sing all year, we understand. Once students can read music, choristers are allowed to sing on Sundays, as long as they have attended enough prior rehearsals to have learned the music. taped music and written words are often sent home to help with memorization.
We look forward to returning members and welcome all newcomers. No previous music experience is necessary, just a love for music, and a dedication to sing God’s praises and to do the best for the whole choir. Brochures, schedules, handbooks, and sign-up sheets will be available on Rally Sunday, See you on RALLY SUNDAY. Or, you may pick up a brochure at the church now and leave the enclosed form there.

Amistad
Celebration Day at new venue!Dr. Nancy S. Taylor, President, MACUCC
Due to overwhelming response to our Amistad Celebration Day, October 25th, 2003, (already over 4000 tickets sold!) we have changed the venue to the FleetBoston Pavilion where we can accommodate 10,000 people. The Pavilion is located south of the Moakley Courthouse, for more directions, parking or information on the facility try www.fleetbostonpavilion.com. All who want to come can now hear the Amistad story, celebrate the freedom schooner’s presence, and re-covenant to addressing issues of race and justice.
The Pavilion has a main stage where we will put on a two-hour worship and celebration event that will be presented three times during the day: 9.30-11.30am; 12.30-2.30pm; and 3.30-5.30pm. Please use the registration form (www.macucc.org/amistad) to purchase new or additional tickets. If you previously purchased tickets, we have already contacted your church, or will shortly do so. Every effort is being made to accommodate time slots you originally requested. The entrance fee of ($5 adults/$3 children) will now be the entrance fee to the Pavilion itself. Advance tickets are still required. Get your order form at www.macucc.org/amistad. The deadline is October 1, 2003.
Plan to come for a three-hour time block. The stage event will cover a two-hour span of time. You can see the exhibit, visit the schooner, and buy refreshments before, during, or after the main stage event. This main stage event will include: renowned storyteller Valerie Tutson telling the Amistad story through the eyes of the little girl Margru, one of the captives; Captain Bill Pinkney (maritime folklorist), in one of his last events as master of the Amistad, on the mission of the freedom schooner and its challenge to us; solemn and celebratory worship with instrumentalists and choirs. Everyone will have a chance to see the Amistad exhibition panels, watch the introductory video in a separate tent with several viewing screens, and then walk the deck of the freedom schooner itself. (Please note that visits to the Amistad never include a visit below decks). Buses are able to park nearby, and there is a multi-level parking garage five minutes walk away. We will provide a free shuttle from the garage for those for whom this distance would be a difficulty.
Bring your new member classes, your confirmation classes and youth groups. Come as Women's Fellowships, Men's Fellowships, Mission Committees, church choirs and Christian Education Boards. Come as an entire church community or a single family, or alone! Just come. Whether you come alone or in a group, you will not want to miss this event.

Christian Education Corner
Wow!
Fall is here and we are going to hit the ground running. Before I look ahead, I want to look back a little bit. Vacation Bible School was a huge hit with 80 kids. The One Room Schoolhouse has been a big success and we’re grateful to all the people who taught. The kids helped put together school supplies, bought with their offering money, for kids in the area that need a hand. I cannot look back without noticing a big hole that is left by some major changes in the youth ministry. Peggy O’Neil Files will be changing her responsibilities at the church so she will no longer be working with the JYF. Peggy’s ministry will be missed in this area. We wish her God’s blessings as she begins a new leg of her educational journey. After 15 years, Bill Farquharson, has "retired" from SYF. We would be hard pressed to find an equal record of youth ministry volunteer time in any church in the country. Bill will definitely be missed and he leaves some hard shoes to fill. We are grateful for all Bill did in ministering to the youth of this church and community for so long. Luckily, Bill will be starting and facilitating a group for adults beginning in the fall. Stay tuned for more information about this._______________________________________________
Now back to hitting the ground running…
Teacher Training for all Church School Teachers, both full time and substitutes, is September 3rd from 7:00p.m. -9:00p.m. in the vestry. We will have various materials, books, helpful hints and an all around good time. Milton Brasher-Cunningham, a teacher, ordained minister, writer, artist and singer/song-writer will be leading this training time. I can promise that it will be well worth your time.

RALLY SUNDAY IS SEPTEMBER 7TH!
Church School gets back in full swing. All of the children and teachers will go directly to the vestry for a group welcome and worship and then we will go to our individual classes. We are using the BibleQuest curriculum. BibleQuest uses a fun, age-appropriate approach that helps children learn and experience different Bible stories each week. Through Church School, we want each child to know that they are unique, beloved children of God. Come join us for a very exciting year.

RALLY SUNDAY KICK-OFF IS SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH!
Rally Sunday is so important in our church year that we want to stretch it out a little. Please join us for the following activities:
_______________________________________________
Family Fun Afternoon 3:00-5:00 PM
For families with children in Church School, we will have games and activities to help us get a good start for the new School and Church School years. Come join us for what hopes to be a new annual tradition._______________________________________________
Church Wide Cook Out 5:00-7:00 PM Church School is a ministry of the whole Church. We are going to come together as the Pilgrim Church Family to eat, play games, eat, enjoy the fellowship, eat-well, you get the point! Let’s kick off the new year in a grand way.
_______________________________________________
KIDS! While you are out shopping for your school supplies, get some extra supplies for kids that need a helping hand. On Rally Sunday Kick-Off on Sept. 6th and Rally Sunday on September 7th, you can bring the supplies to the Church. We will add them to the supplies from the One Room Schoolhouse and then give them away with the help of some of the groups in our area that know how to get these things to the kids that really need them. This is a great way for you to share the love of Jesus with someone else. I look forward to seeing each of you in Church School this year. We are going to do a lot of fun things while we learn about the Bible and how much Jesus loves each one of us.

Confirmation Class of 2004 The Pilgrim Church Confirmation Team will be sending out preliminary letters with information for this year’s Confirmands. Confirmation is offered each year to our current 9th graders and any older students who have not previously been confirmed. If you have not received a letter by Sept. 15th and you wish to participate in the program, please contact the church secretary (934-6591) and let her know to add your name to the list. If you have any questions regarding the program please contact Rev. Landall or Rev. Parks at the Church.
Senior High Youth The annual trip to the Heifer project farm is the weekend of September 12th –14th. Space is limited so sign up right away. Permission slips are available in the church office. Cost is to be determined.
_______________________________________________
Attention confirmands!! You can get credit towards your outreach work by participating in this trip. Call Peggy Files or Eloise Parks for more information. (934-6591)

Kid’s Club and Junior Youth Fellowship The grades have been changed to match the grade changes at Alden and DMS. Kid’s Club will now be 4th and 5th grades and JYF will be 6th, 7th and 8th grades. Be on the lookout for upcoming activities once the school year has gotten underway. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Rally Sunday Kick-Off and Rally Sunday.

This is going to be a wonderful year
full of opportunities for all of us to come together as the family of Christ and learn more about what it means to be His disciples. We enter this year with excitement, wonder and prayerful anticipation.Come and learn, come and play, come and see.

A Letter to the Congregation…
The youth ministry at our church is in transition. After 15 years of service, Bill Farquharson has "retired" from SYF (Senior Youth Fellowship). Peggy Files will no longer be working with the JYF (Junior Youth Fellowship) as her responsibilities at the church are changing. I have met with different groups of adults and youth in the past several weeks. We have prayed and dreamed and brainstormed about how to fill the void that is left by these changes. We need people who are willing to step into this very important ministry. We are looking at forming teams of two who will work with the youth groups. Each group will meet 2 Sundays out of the month. If you can commit to both Sundays, that would be optimal. If you can commit to one Sunday, that would be great. I am asking that we have at least one person who will commit to both Sundays for the SYF. The youth and I feel that there needs to be at least one person who is there each time. This will facilitate trust and continuity within the group process. We will provide materials and curriculum and other types of support.
Besides, it’s fun!
The top 10 reasons to be involved in Pilgrim Youth Ministry
;10. You’ll be keeping surly ne’er-do-wells off our streets!
The youth are a treasure in our church. For two millennia our faith has been passed person to person around the world. Here is our chance to pass it to the next generation.
Please call me if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing from you.
Peace and Grace,
Eloise Parks, Director of Christian Education and Youth Ministries
