PILGRIM’S PROGRESS April 2004 Parson to Persons: The Passion and the Glory
I need to begin by stating right up front that I have not yet seen Mel Gibson’s movie, The Passion of the Christ, and I may not. Extremely gory, violent films have never been high on my "to see" list. This is my primary reason for not seeing the film; I really do not want to subject myself to the brutality that everyone who has seen it (critics and enthusiasts alike) readily admits is there. I won’t discourage any mature adult from going, certainly not any church member, but I won’t encourage you either. From all the publicity that the movie has gotten, you know what you’re in for if you decide to go.
Most of what I know about the movie I have read (from a variety of sources) or gotten first hand from a few folks I know who have seen it. The reviews have been mixed. The depth of Christ’s sacrifice for humanity is vividly portrayed (some would say too vividly). The love shown between Jesus and his mother is apparently very moving. For some who have seen it, the movie was truthful and inspiring and a reaffirmation of their faith.
But, there are other negatives besides the violence. Some critics feel that the film caricatured or maligned Jews. Frankly, this makes me uncomfortable. With a resurgence of anti-Semitism around the world, I say, let’s not encourage any more intolerance. Some have stated that there is quite a bit in the film that is not in the Scriptures; maybe this is just Hollywood or maybe Mel has another agenda. If so, this troubles me. Some have stated that there is no message of redemption, hardly any word of forgiveness, scant attention to the rest of Jesus’ life, or to his resurrection. And the medieval passion plays upon which this genre is based were lacking in all these also.
I assume that most of us already know of Christ’s great sacrifice for us; we know of the depth of his love; we believe the gospel story deep in our hearts; and we know how it ends. This is kind of where I’m coming from in not seeing it. And I’m not sure I want to be left with those graphic, gory images that do not quickly fade from memory.
Beyond this, however, I think we in the Protestant church tradition with our primary accent on the empty cross (emphasizing the new life given to us through the resurrection) may have a different theological mind-set than do our Catholic brothers and sisters. They worship in churches with the crucifix, with Jesus still hanging upon the cross (emphasizing the sacrifice of the crucifixion) usually front and center. It is not a matter of either/or, just what gets accentuated more.
We Protestants go through the pilgrimage of Lent, experiencing the sorrows of the season, but doing so in the context of what is coming. At the far end of the Lenten journey stands the cross, but beyond the cross, God’s love and faithfulness to us on Easter. We acknowledge the passion of the Christ, yes, but we keep looking beyond this to the glory of the resurrection to come.
There’s a famous incident in John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress (from which this newsletter is named) that speaks to this point. The main character, Christian, is greatly burdened with a load on his back (his guilt and sins, if I remember correctly) until he comes to the Cross. Here’s how Bunyan puts it: "So I saw in my dream, that just as Christian came up to the Cross, his burden loosed from his shoulders, and fell off his back, and began to tumble … to the mouth of the Sepulchre, where it fell in, and I saw it no more. Then was Christian glad and lightsome, and said with a merry heart, ‘He hath given me rest by his sorrow, and life by his death.’ … Then Christian gave three leaps for joy, and went on his way singing."
It is the new life that we experience through the sacrifice of Christ that is our emphasis. For sure, that sacrifice was horrific. Our God in Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price for us. But praise God, there is Easter morning. And Easter is a time for joyful leaps and singing hearts.
May the joy of the upcoming Easter season renew your spirits and lift your hearts.
Shalom,
Ken

Duxbury Interfaith Council Looking for Special Help
The Duxbury Interfaith Council is in need of some new leadership to organize and operate its Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring food basket program for the needy of our community. Eric Swanson has been doing this for several years, assisted by our own Diane Cederberg. They both have served faithfully and are now ready to pass the baton to others. The Council is looking for three or four people who could take on this important responsibility. Bob Merrifield from our congregation has agreed to be one of these, but the job is much bigger than for one person alone. If you feel God calling you to such an important ministry, speak to Ken Landall or call Eric Swanson (781-934-2207) for more details.

Binh Rybacki Captivates Pilgrim Church Audience
Seventy-five people sat spellbound, this past Sunday, as Binh Rybacki spoke of her life in Vietnam, escaping, as a college student, from the advancing North Vietnamese by hiding in a trash can, and of her work today, caring for the orphaned children of Vietnam.
Binh, the founder of Children of Peace, talked about the right and the need of every child to feel loved and valued. The over 4,500 children under her care are blessed to be so loved and valued. Dr. David DeHart, son of Don and Lynn DeHart of Duxbury, and his wife Julie, a pediatric nurse, accompanied Binh to Vietnam last year on a medical mission to care for Binh’s many children. He said that upon seeing Binh, the children would let out whoops of joy and surround her in great, excited crowds, reaching out for one of her hugs.
She has founded eleven schools and orphanages. She fills them with children she rescues from being sold into prostitution and with street children who turn to thievery to support themselves. Other children are abandoned at birth, by mothers who are overwhelmed by the children they already have. She has a school for deaf children, teaching them how to embroider and sew so that they can have a marketable skill and not have to sell themselves to keep alive. She has started a clinic / orphanage for children with HIV/AIDS. She gives out micro loans to single women with children to help them finance cottage industries so the family can stay together.
The Pilgrim church audience reacted to Binh’s slides with gasps of sorrow, as the children’s stories were told, and with smiles of pleasure at the happy faces of the children, now safe with Binh.
Her organization is almost fully run by volunteers. A question was asked as to why Binh receives no salary. "How much could I accept and still sleep at night?" she asked. "Even if it were as little as $5000 a year, with that money I could take in twenty-one more children for a year. How could I do that?"
Binh, now a wife and mother living in Colorado, found that she could not leave the lost children of Vietnam to their sorrowful fates. She, a woman of remarkable charisma and dedication, decided to do something…and she has.
If you would like to help, you could sponsor a child for $20.00 a month or you could donate to one of the ongoing projects. You may call Lynn or Don DeHart at 837-3668, or e-mail Binh Rybacki at childrenofpeace@hotmail.com.

SENIOR YOUTH FELLOWSHIP
(SYF)Be sure to join us at the COFFEE HOUSE sponsored by SYF and the Duxbury Student Union Assn. Friday, April 30 from 7:30 to 9:30 in the Church Vestry. See the vestry transformed into entertainment central with student bands and singers. Refreshments will be available and admission is FREE (drinks are $ .50). If you wish to perform, be sure to sign up! Call us at 781-585-0596 or email
TLClark54@aol.com.SPECIAL NOTE TO PARENTS and/or INTERESTED ADULTS:
Carl McDonald, our Massachusetts UCC Associate for Youth and CE ministries writes that a critical component of a successful, active youth ministry is a group of caring adults. With that in mind, we're establishing an SYF Advisory Group to help Rod and I lead this remarkable group of young adults. We envision the SYF Advisory Group meeting roughly quarterly to review SYF activities in the past few months and offer suggestions, advice, concerns and ideas for coming months. Additionally, we would look to our "advisors" to help out from time to time as chaperones, bakers, wheels or whatever. We're planning to meet for the first time in late May or early June, discussing the spring events that will have taken place and looking toward summer and Fall. If you are interested in joining us, please call or email. We, and the kids would be so grateful.Terri and Rod Clark

If you are interested in attending, please call or e-mail Mark Cleveland (781-934-1519, mcleveland@braintreelabs.com) or Jim Kerkam (781-934-9838, Jgkerkam@aol.com) so your name can be added to the notification list.
A special "thank you" to Mark Zolla and Andy Wiemeyer for coordinating the March project. We had fun cleaning up the play area for all our pre-school children.
Our next meeting will be on Saturday April 24th at 8 am in the church library to plan our May activity.

We think we should recognize, thank and commend all of those who have contributed so much to our Christian growth over the past two months. Our Stewardship theme this year has been, "What Shall We Bring Before God?" The gifts have been extraordinary. Think of it. The Stephen Ministry is picking up steam and their supper/auction put on by the Deacons was a huge success. A newly formed Saturday Men's group is getting off the ground with a Church March workday. The Outreach Committee put on an Amistad/Racism luncheon and workshop that drew a large crowd that was uniquely challenged to think or rethink on this sensitive subject. The Pine Street Inn book drive and the Sat Night Five service with a potluck supper were two other activities which took place over and above all of the usual on-going activities. The generosity has been inspiring!!!

Believe it or not! we are seeing some progress in the installation of the new organ. Certainly much later than we expected. I am pushing the installer to have it ready for Easter so am planning the special music accordingly. It has been fun providing piano music for our Sunday worship but I do prefer to play the organ at church services. I have been coming daily in the early morning to practice and I am trying my best to block out the sound of the ciphers (pipes with air escaping causing them to continue to sound). How wonderful will be the music when these are corrected. When you finally hear this wonderful instrument, I am sure you will agree that it was worth the wait.
We would welcome anyone who would like to sing (or play bells) in any of the choirs at our church on a regular basis or just for Easter. If interested, please let me know.

Stephen Ministers: The After People
Frequently friends will ask, " I know you’re involved in Stephen Ministry. Can you tell me exactly what a Stephen Minister is?" I like to explain that Stephen Ministers are "After People"
Stephen Ministers are there:
…after you’ve washed and returned the last casserole dish.
…after the divorce papers have been served and the bottom falls out of your life.
…after the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away – and the house
suddenly seems incredibly empty.
…after you arrive home following the funeral service and the emotions
you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.
…after the relationship has ended but the wounds are still bleeding and
painful.
…after the doctors have said, "There’s nothing more we can do."
…after the door has slammed shut – for the very last time.
…after the phone call you’d always hoped you’d never get.
…after you realize the hands on the gold watch you received at your
retirement party move more slowly than you ever imagined.
…after the nursing home director shakes your hand and says,"Welcome
to your new home."
…after the gavel goes down, the handcuffs go on, and your loved one is
led away.
…after the baby has arrived, putting more demands on you than you ever
dreamed possible.
…after you find the pink slip inserted with what is now your final paycheck.
…after your family and friends have heard your story one too many times,
but you still need to talk it out.
Stephen Ministers are the "After People." We are ready to come alongside you - or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives – and provide comfort and support for as long "after" as we are needed. Please consider becoming a Stephen Minister.

I had no idea when I drove up from Texas that I would end up at Pilgrim Church. But God knew. It is always an adventure to follow God. I am grateful that God led me here to this family of believers. It has been a busy year. I have learned a lot and I continue to learn.
I am grateful for all of the help that you have offered and the grace that you have given while I am learning. I am always interested in your ideas and your feedback. I pray that we, as a Church family, will continue to grow and to learn what it is to be a follower of Christ.
Thank you to all of you who expressed your care and sympathy at the time of my aunt’s death. Your emails, cards, rides and offers of rides to the airport, and especially your prayers were greatly appreciated. I felt cared for. Thank you.
Peace and Grace,
Eloise
