April 2005

Parson to Persons: 'Equipping the Saints' Again at Pilgrim Church

Once again it is our privilege to be hosting the highly acclaimed 'Equipping the Saints for the Work of Ministry' workshops, sponsored by the Mass. Conference of the U.C.C. It is wonderful to be able to let our facility be used for this important practical training for local church leaders in our area. Usually attending are about 100 participants from churches in the Pilgrim, Barnstable, and Old Colony Associations. Hopefully many of you will want to be part of this educational event also.

Equipping the Saints will take place on Sunday afternoon, April 10th from 3:00 to 6:00 PM (including a luscious fellowship meal put on by our own Christian Ed folks for a modest cost of $10). The cost of the program is paid for through our OCWM mission giving and fellowship dues, so it is free to our members. There will be ten workshops offered this year on a variety of subjects:

  • Called to Care: Organizing your church for Caregiving (probably not of interest to us since we are already a Stephen Ministry church).

  • How to Prevent Molehills from Becoming Mountains: Pastor-Parish Relations Committees: A workshop for p-p committees, deacons, and pastors.

  • UCC 101 Today: A workshop for lay leaders and pastors. This one looks very interesting, and is led by Dale Hempen, our Area Minister.

  • How Did They Do That - Portraits of Transformative Stewardship: A workshop for church leaders, especially stewardship folks.

  • Evangelism is Not a Dirty Word New Ways of Learning to Share our Story.

  • Mission Leadership: A workshop designed to strengthen the local and global mission of the church.

  • How We Learn Effects What We Learn: A workshop for church educators, members of CE committees, or pastors.

  • Raising Lazarus and Other Miracles for Teaching Teens: A workshop for youth leaders, members of CE committees, or pastors.

  • The Still Speaking Initiative What does it mean for your church?

  • Church Response to Disasters.

Registration deadline is April 1st (just about when you are reading this). I'm sure since we're the hosts, we can register a day or two later, but need to do so real soon! Copies of the registration form (and the four easy ways to register) and a more detailed description of the workshops are on the bulletin board in the upstairs hallway going in to the Vestry.

Any questions, please call me at 934-6591. Blessings for a happy Eastertide!

    Shalom,

    Ken

    Stewardship Moment

There are a number of things we 'expect' in our lives; the light of day each morning, a child's innocence and God's patience. We also expect much from our church, don't we? Every Sunday morning our Pastors, Choir, Sunday School Teachers, Ushers and Greeters are ready to implement God's work in a clean inviting sanctuary. Many members make this happen through their time, talents and tithes. The church is one body and we all have a responsibility in some way to further Christ's teachings. Our tithes, or pledges, are especially important. Pilgrim UCC committees provide the sights, sounds and programs so vital to our spiritual journey. For those of you, who completed a pledge card, thank you. The committee's budget is established with these funds. The church building is also maintained with this budget. For those of you, who give weekly in the collection plate, thank you. Please consider converting this cash to a pledge card, won't you? It's never too late. Think of what the extra budget dollars could be spent on. As always, those who give their time and talents are the bedrock of our church. Next time you are absorbing the weekly worship experience, take solace that you are a vital part of our church and there is always a place for your time, talent and tithes

    STOO FAC

Did you know that each time the church property has snow plowing, sanding and walkways shoveled, that it costs over $400?

Did you know that members of Pilgrim Church contributed over $5,000 for tsunami relief?

    REACHING OUT . . . . .

On March 13th, Outreach Sunday, Peg Drisko-Johnson, representing the Pine Street Inn, spoke to a gathering after church, giving us a better understanding of just what Pine Street is and does. About 30 of our members have joined a group that helps to serve an evening meal on the second Friday of each month. It isn't just a commitment of time. Peg made the point that most of their guests are not only homeless, they lead a dreadfully lonely life. So, although the brief one-on-one contact that comes from adding a spoonful of potatoes to a plate may seem insignificant, it isn't. An exchange that may consist of momentary eye contact and a conversation as brief as 'more gravy'' can be a bright spot in an otherwise dreary, demeaning life without home and family. Rarely does the expression 'there but for the grace of God go I' take on more meaning. And the rewards are priceless: When you hear 'Thank you' or 'God bless you' spoken with sincerity, and often a smile, you know that in a small way, you are doing God's work.. If you would like to take part, give Pat Wiedner a call. She will be glad to add your name to our list so that you can share the experience.

    LOOKING FOR HOST FAMILIES

AFS is currently recruiting families to host foreign students who will attend Duxbury High School next year. For over 50 years, this international exchange organization has worked toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities. By bringing an AFS student into your home, you and your family, will be working toward a more just and peaceful world.

Hosting is a way for all kinds of families ? two parent families with small children, teens, or no children living at home, as well as single parents, grandparents, and people who do not have children ? to have a global experience without leaving home. Host families are expected to include visiting students in their daily activities, and provide meals and a bed along with the kind of support you would typically give your own child. You probably know that families often discover they have received more than they have given; they treasure deep connections that last a lifetime.

For more information about hosting with AFS, phone AFS Support Volunteer Debbie Gallaher, 781-834-0708, or Judy Weyland, 781-934-6608.

    SATURDAY NIGHT FIVE!

April will be our last full month of services until the fall! It is hard to believe that we are rounding that bend in the year again. What this means is you only have a few more chances to attend Saturday Night Five before the summer comes. We promise you will not be disappointed. We are pleased to have Diane Conley join our worship team. She will be helping us plan music and playing piano at all our services. As you already know, Diane is a gifted musician and we are very happy to have her with us. The first weekend in April is when many of the high school band members will be traveling to Disney, as we think about their trip and the other events that come up in the spring, prom, graduation and all, we will gather to offer praise and thanksgiving for all our children and ask for God to watch over them and instill in them the ability to make good decisions. On April 16th as we think about Earth Day, we will especially focus on all God's creatures. And on April 30th we will honor God as our Heavenly Parent, both mother and father.

    April 16 - All God's Creatures

April 30* - Honor Your Mother and Father

    Christian Education Corner

Kid's Klub*Kid's Klub-The next meeting of Kid's Klub will be on Sunday April 24th from 2-4PM in the Vestry. I don't know if we can top the fabulous Easter Egg/Scavenger Hunt that we had in March-but we will try! Where else can you learn about God's love, play crazy games and eat great snacks? Hope to see you on the 24th!!

JYF*JYF*JYF-Hopefully, we will not be snowed out for our next meeting. This will be a great time for all. We are going to a Pawtucket Red Sox Game! On April 29th at 4:45PM, we will meet in the parking lot to go to the game. Please bring $20-$10 for food and $10 for the ticket. (Parents-we need drivers who can handle 6+passengers. Please let the Beatties <781-934-2646> know if you can drive.) We will return to the parking lot at 10PM.

Confirmation-You're coming into home stretch. If you are meeting with your mentors, keeping track of your inreach and outreach hours and preparing for the April 10th service, you are doing exactly the right things. If you have any questions or concerns about any of these, please let me know.

Youth Outreach-The first meeting went well and the group is off and running. The first project was making 22 Easter Baskets for children in an area shelter. Next, Youth Outreach will be collecting items in conjuction with the Kingston/Duxbury Kiwanis Club to be sent to our soldiers in the Middle East. Toiletries, games, practical items such as cameras, batteries, etc. are among the suggested ideas. A complete list of items are posted on the church bulletin board, as well as in the side entrance vestibule, where the collection box, labeled for the troops, is located.

Spring has to be one of God's best gifts to us. I am especially grateful for it this year. In Revelation 21:5, God says: 'Behold I am making all things new.' Spring is a yearly reminder for us of the work that God is doing and will continue to do until the end of time.

    Rejoicing in new life,

    Rev. Eloise

    A note of thanks

I am at a loss for the right words to express my appreciation for the lovely evening that you gave me. I am grateful for the service, the dinner, the cards and the gifts. Most of all, I was and still am overwhelmed by the expressions of love and celebration. I will cherish the evening always. As I have said before, we never know where God is going to lead us but the journey is always worth it. I am so happy that God led me here to you. I am looking forward to many years of ministry here with the Pilgrim Church family. I am grateful for each of you.

    With a grateful heart,

    Eloise
