PILGRIM’S PROGRESS

November 2005

Parson to Persons: "Pat Wiedner, Long-Time Administrator, to Retire"

It’s hard to believe, but after 18 years, Pat Wiedner, our Church Administrator will be retiring. Her last Sunday with us will be December 11th, and we will be having a reception after the service to honor and thank her for all her years of dedicated service.

Pat started in the position, then known as Administrative Assistant, when the Rev. Steve Hussing was Senior Pastor. She and her two children, Bill and Carol, had lived in Duxbury for seven years, after the sudden death of Pat’s husband, John, in 1980, just after they came here. Only nine months after Pat started at the Church, Steve also died unexpectedly. For those of us not here at that time, it’s hard to imagine the trauma our congregation went through losing a beloved pastor so suddenly. Pat was the "glue" that held this congregation together during that incredibly difficult time. Her caring sensitivity to the needs of others and her no-nonsense way of getting things done, was the right combination that the church needed in that trying time. She also saw the church through two interim pastors, before my arrival in September of 1989.

Even before I had arrived, I knew that Pat was going to be an integral part of my ministry here, as she made Claudia and me feel welcome in our new town. Her vast knowledge of the church and its members, her insights into "church politics," and her obvious faith and love of God and of Pilgrim Church were and have been incredibly valuable to me as I’ve ministered among you these past 16 years. As the years have gone by, Pat has become an increasingly trusted and valued colleague. As the prime answer-person for literally any question about the church, and as many of us have lovingly said, the one who really "runs the church," Pat will, needless to say, be sorely missed by all of us in our congregation – and especially by me.

A part of Pat’s life that some of you may not know about was the devoted care she provided to her mother, Edna Duncan, who passed away a little over a year ago. Edna was able to live on her own at the elderly housing complex in the center of town (what Pat lovingly calls "Wrinkle Village") up until she died in her 94th year. Pat was dedicated to Edna’s well-being, and she (and all of us) misses Edna very much.

None of us can be too sad for what awaits Pat in Florida. She has purchased a condo in Naples, and will only be a couple of hours drive from her son and daughter-in-law and two grandsons and her daughter. She looks forward to golfing year round, playing grandma more often, and enjoying the balmy Florida weather and hopefully not too many hurricanes. She has promised to come back up North periodically to visit her many friends here.

I am pleased to announce that Cathy Doughty will be our new "Administrative Assistant" upon Pat’s departure. Cathy has been our Church Secretary and will continue these duties plus assuming all of Pat’s responsibilities except some of the financial parts, which will be picked up in another way.

Don’t forget our worship service on December 11th and the reception that will follow. It will be a time to honor a faithful employee of the church and good friend to many, Pat Wiedner, who will be entering into a well-deserved time of rest and relaxation. The words of Jesus keep coming to mind: "Well done, good and faithful servant." Indeed, indeed.

Shalom,

Ken

STOO FAC

Did you know that there are over that there are over 150 doors of various kinds in the church? Many have locks, such as on the front doors; but for all the locks there is only one key: YOU are the KEY. You are the church; and through your support, you open every door and opportunity available at Pilgrim Church.

Thank you to everyone who sent back their pledge cards allowing the Trustees to form the budget for the coming fiscal year.

SATURDAY NIGHT FIVE!

We hope you will join us for our Saturday Services this month. On November 5th, we will be honoring those that have gone on before us. Join us as we remember the loved ones that continue to live in our hearts. Join us as for this special time of worship when we thank God for the gift of friends and family. We will also celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

On November 19th, in keeping with our theme of Thanksgiving this month, we will have a wonderful celebration of thanks. Come share in this time of gratitude to God, the giver of all good gifts.

The Parish Nursing Committee reminds you that a six month physical exam is sometimes easy to overlook or put off. This amounts to putting off your own well being. Do consider that if it weren’t for your health, most of the items which keep you too busy to get a checkup would be irrelevant; and procrastination on a checkup is "putting the cart before the horse". God would have us care for our bodies as He cares for us, and we show our willingness to accept his love when we take care of ourselves. Make the call… make and keep the appointment for a regular six month checkup.

Your Parish Nurse, Lisa William, RN, is always available to you for your health related concerns and questions. She may be contacted through the Church office or at 781-934-0931.

A note from the Board of Christian Outreach---

Thanks to the many who bought the Fair Trade coffee, cocoa mix, and chocolate bars on October 2. There is very little "Sale Coffee" left, meaning that most of the out-of-freshness-date items were sold. Hopefully each of you is now enjoying your purchase and will provide us with feedback regarding the flavor/strength for each type of coffee.

When we order from Equal Exchange, they send us fresh coffee that is considered "fresh and best flavor" for 90 days. The coffee sold on Oct. 2nd was at the end of its 90 day period; hence, the "sale prices". Please let us know what you thought about the freshness so that we can judge how to deal with a similar situation in the future.

Due to the strong interest expressed on the questionnaires received so far about the Fair Trade products, the Board of Outreach will be selling coffee, cocoa mix, and chocolate on the SECOND SUNDAY of EACH MONTH in the Vestry after morning worship. On November 13th, we will be offering two new coffees (French Vanilla medium roast and Decaf Colombian full city roast) and a new chocolate bar (very dark).

Your feedback about what you desire is important to us because there are: 2 flavors of conventional coffee; 6 flavors of organic coffee; 3 flavors of "flavored" coffee; and 3 flavors of decaffeinated coffee. For the bakers in the congregation, there is organic unsweetened baking cocoa available along with several recipes from Equal Exchange.

We will be looking for you after worship on November 13, and each SECOND SUNDAY of the MONTH thereafter.

CHOIR NOTES…..

A very exciting event will take place at our church on November 20th at 4:00. Our third annual Messiah Sing will be conducted by Steven Karidoyanes, conductor of the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra! Beth MacLeod is preparing the chorus and I will be doing what I love best, playing our wonderful organ. Tickets are $10; senior tickets available for $8. This is a wonderful community outreach for our music program and our church. We have singers from other areas and churches joining us and, as a result, they are becoming acquainted with the wonderful people at Pilgrim Church. Save the date and bring your friends. If they like to sing, bring a copy of the music and join the chorus from the audience. The concert will close with the beloved "Hallelujah Chorus" sing.

What could be a better beginning to the Christmas season?

TEEN CHOIR IS BACK

Neighbors in Need Special Offering

The Outreach Committee is sponsoring the Neighbors in Need special offering, which will take place on Sunday, November 20th. Neighbors in Need (NIN) is one of four special offerings benefiting Our Church’s Wider Mission. The NIN specifically supports ministries that address poverty, economic development, human rights, peacemaking, violence, recial and economic justice, environmental concerns, and public policy advocacy. Grants of $5000 are awarded to UCC churches and grass roots and community and/or non profit organizations that are striving to "make things right" through their local social justice advocacy. Two thirds of the NIN special offering supports direct service projects, with a significant portion of these grants given to those involved in addressing the issues of hunger and poverty. The remaining one-third supports the Council of American Indian Ministries (CAIM), which is the voice for the American Indians in the UCC. The Outreach Committee asks you to prayerfully consider supporting the Neighbors in Need special offering as a way to lend support to help those who are advocating for the voiceless and looking to alleviate suffering through justice advocacy and direct service.
