PILGRIM’S PROGRESS
December 2005
Parson to Persons: "Ready or Not, Here It Comes!"
The Advent-Christmas season seems to come upon us earlier and earlier each
year. The Christmas displays were up in some stores before Halloween! There are
now only "x" shopping days ‘til Christmas. Like the old childhood game of "hide
and go seek," ready or not, here it comes!
For Christians, Advent is the time of preparation before Christmas, a time when we can shift gears a bit and wait expectantly for the coming of our Lord. Truth is, few of us prepare as we should because of all the many other demands upon us at this time of year. Advent helps us to focus on the important preparations. Let me suggest three of them for us this year.
First, let’s prepare by being open to the Spirit of Christmas, especially being open to the renewal of our spirits, which can only happen if we let the Holy Spirit into our lives. Being open means being receptive to God by listening to God speaking to us. God is still speaking – even in the 21st century! Listen to God in prayer, in worship, in the creation, even in the voices of others.
Second, we can better prepare for Christmas by personally responding to the Spirit’s urgings. We respond with obedience when God calls us (as Joseph did when he heard the voice of God in a dream). We respond by being patient. It’s so easy to become impatient – with ourselves, with clerks in the stores, with our children, with the long line of cars ahead of us – patience is a virtue, especially in this season. We respond by accepting whatever comes our way, accepting that we probably won’t get everything done that we want, accepting that others may be short-tempered, accepting the sorrows we often feel as well as the joys of the holiday times.
Finally, to better prepare for Christmas, let’s be intentional about spreading the Spirit. If we will remind ourselves of our many blessings and feel the Christmas Spirit inside of us, we’ll radiate these feelings of joy, and they will rub off onto others. We spread the Spirit foremost by remembering others – in our gifts and cards, in our special contributions into the Salvation Army buckets or in our Christmas Fund special offering envelopes on Christmas Eve, in visiting a shut in, in going caroling with neighbors, as well as in many other ways.
Ready or not, here it comes! Christmas will be here before we know it, so there’s not a lot of time to prepare. Let’s do so by being open to the Spirit of Christmas (by listening for the still-speaking God), by responding to the Spirit (obediently, patiently, and with acceptance), and by spreading the Spirit of Christmas, God’s love for humanity in Jesus Christ, wherever we go and in whatever we do (especially as we remember others in special ways). If we can do all this in addition to our many other tasks, then we will be ready for Christmas in the most important ways possible, we’ll be ready for the Christ to come again as a babe in a manger on Christmas morning.
May each of you and your loved ones have a blessed, joyous, and very merry Christmas.
Shalom,
Ken

As you enjoy the beautiful seasonal music from our new organ, did you know that the instrument requires tuning twice a year for its 925 pipes, at a cost of over $800.00 each time?
Did you know that over 50 volunteers spent more than 1500 hours of their personal time in outreach to our Sunday school students by painting and decorating the "Bible Adventure" and "Rainbow Arts and Crafts" classrooms?

From Outreach…….
The Board of Christian Outreach appreciates your support---Thanks for your continued support of the Equal Exchange project through your purchase of Fair Trade coffee, cocoa mix, and chocolate bars. Several people have indicated preferences for stronger "roasts" such as the Medium French and French. Please let us know what you think about the coffee’s freshness so that we can better judge how meaningful the 90 day freshness criterion needs to be followed.
For December, there will be a change to our schedule of selling the products on the 2nd Sunday of each month. The change is essential due to the marvelous reception being held on Dec. 11th honoring Pat Wiedner. Therefore, Board of Outreach will be selling coffee, cocoa mix, and chocolate on SUNDAY DECEMBER 4th . Please mark your calendars.
This will be excellent time to do some holiday shopping---thank you gifts for teachers, hostess gifts, cocoa for Santa, stocking stuffers for Mom, Dad, Grandparents, Brothers, Sisters, Aunts, Uncles, and neighbors. You might even indulge yourself with a treat.
Your feedback about what coffee you desire is important to us because there are 2 flavors of conventional coffee; 6 flavors of organic coffee; 3 flavors of "flavored" coffee; and 3 flavors of decaffeinated coffee. For the bakers in the congregation, there is organic unsweetened baking cocoa available along with several recipes from Equal Exchange. So please tell us your preferences and we will attempt to have your favorite available. Selling the Fair Trade products in the Vestry on the 2nd Sunday of each month will continue in 2006.
Board of Outreach looks forward to seeing you after worship on December 4.

The Duxbury Interfaith Council is again preparing for their Winter Basket Drive, that benefits 150 of our neighboring families in need of assistance. THE CHRISTMAS FUND
Since 1902, there has been an ever-growing remembrance of needful retired clergy in our churches at Christmas time. The Christmas Fund offering (previously Veterans of the Cross) continues and expands the legacy of "remembering those who serve the church".
The Christmas Fund is able to assist retired clergy and their families with much needed funds for life’s most basic needs, as well as with emergency grants for those unexpected situations that require immediate attention and insurance costs for the disabled. Thanks to your generosity, the cost of health plan premiums is subsidized for many low-income retirees. Your offering to the Christmas Fund also provides emergency grant assistance to actively employed clergy families in times of financial crisis.
Look for the special envelopes provided in the bulletin on Christmas Eve. Your gifts are a blessing to those who labored to spread the love of Jesus Christ.
