Parson to Persons: To Be Beautiful, You Have to Change

Among the more familiar symbols of Easter, often depicted on greeting cards or church bulletins, is the butterfly. This delicate creature is a good metaphor of resurrection because of its transformation from ugly, hairy caterpillar to the equally unattractive larvae stage in a cocoon to what finally emerges in all its glory.

I had a picture many years ago (I wonder where it went? maybe I’ll rediscover it in "the move"), a picture that showed a drab cocoon, and beside it, a lovely monarch butterfly. Besides being a pretty photograph, the caption under the picture really grabbed me: "To Be Beautiful, You Have to Change." These are important words for understanding the concept of resurrection, and they are important as we live out our lives in an ever-changing world.

The caterpillar doesn’t hop into the cocoon, change its clothes, and then pop out again in its new outfit, in a blink of an eye, like Superman in a phone booth. Rather, the change in the cocoon is slow and quite beyond the control of the caterpillar.

So it is with us. Only by the grace of God do we obtain the new life promised in the Gospels. This new life is ours, not because we’re deserving (because we’re not), not because we’re without sin (we know this isn’t true),

not because we’ve racked up lots of points for all the good things we’ve done (actually our good deeds are irrelevant), but solely because God loves us. To obtain our beautiful new life, we just need to be open to God in Christ working within us and among us.

Resurrection is about change, the changes that occurred in and through Jesus and the changes that can come about in us by the power of Christ in our lives, a power that is building, creating, strengthening, and yes, changing us. As I’m thinking about it, perhaps the caption under that picture that I remember loving so much so long ago, perhaps that caption may not be exactly right. We are already beautiful just by the fact that we are children of God, created in the Creator’s image. We don’t have to do anything to make ourselves beautiful. And true beauty is an inner quality, not an outward characteristic anyway.

And yes, there are some things we are able to change through our own self-will, and for sure, some things in each of us need changing. But the really important changes that happen to us are mostly beyond our control, and perhaps we could even say, they come from God. For example, a strong faith is a gift of God. But to be blessed with a strong faith we need to be open to the God who will willingly give it to us. So, perhaps rather than assuming that we always have to initiate change, better is if we are open to change, open to God working in us.

Our church family will be experiencing many changes in the coming months and years. Pastoral transitions are rarely easy. But each of us (and I certainly include myself here) needs to be open to what God in Christ has in store for us – you as you continue as the body of Christ in this place, and Claudia and I as we begin the next stage of our lives (what we are now calling our "prime time"). I pray that this will be a "prime time" for Pilgrim Church as well, as God leads you into new beginnings and yes, some exciting changes, I am sure.

With faith in God leading our way and with confidence in the abiding presence of our Resurrected Lord, we will become even more "beautiful" than we already are as we continue along our journeys.

May you and yours have a blessed and Happy Easter.

Shalom,

Ken

The In-Between Time

You may recall that in last month’s newsletter, I quoted from a book called Temporary Shepherds A Congregational Handbook for Interim Ministry, edited by Roger S. Nicholson. This is a book about the in-between time - the time between settled pastors - when we ask the important questions: Who can we become? and Where can we go?

The book is divided into four parts including (1) The Interim Congregation, (2) The Interim Journey, (3) Framing the Journey, and (4) Tools for the Journey, and each chapter is authored by .people who are serving as interim ministers. I have found this book to be a valuable tool, full of expert guidance for facing that anxious time after the pastor has resigned, but before he has actually departed.

In the Foreword, Peter Steinke notes that if you view the local church as a system, you see that when a pastor leaves, the departure changes the system. It puts the church in transition, and "transitions disrupt patterns". Since "change in one part affects all the other parts," special attention is needed, and that kind of attention is precisely what an intentional interim minister offers. Though interim ministers may be "temporary shepherds," they can have meaningful, long-term effects on the lives of congregations.

What can we do to make the interim journey exciting and fulfilling despite the risks and challenges associated with it? How can we assure our readiness as a congregation to move forward in new ways with a new leader? One of the authors offers this advice.

1. Pray. Pray for the church and for the pastor.

2, Advise the denominational executive. (DONE)

3. Pray. Pray for the interim time and for the lay leadership of the church.

4. Invite the denominational representative to a board meeting to talk. (DONE)

5. Pray. Pray for other churches in transition and for clergy in searches.

6. Celebrate the pastor’s ministry. (JUNE 3 and 4)

7. Pray. And trust that God is listening.

Our interim committee has been established, and it will be their job to find our temporary shepherd. The group, chaired by Lynn DeHart, includes John MacLaren, Heidi Hadley, and Skip Schippers. Include them in your prayers, and remember that "change is orchestrated by God. It is inevitable." As it occurs and moves us into transition periods, we must listen for the Holy Spirit to guide us through it, and pray.

SPRING FOOD BASKETS

The Duxbury Interfaith Council is making plans for the preparation of Spring Food Baskets to distribute to our less fortunate neighbors. This has become a major community endeavor, and we are grateful for your continued support, as are the 150 recipient families. Here’s what you can do:

Donate Food

Canned fruits and vegetables, non-frozen concentrated 100 percent juice mix, packaged quick-bread, brownie and cake mixes.

Home-baked cookies, brownies, cupcakes, quick breads, and pies are especially appreciated and should be dropped off at Holy Family Church on Wednesday morning, April 12th.

Give Money

Please make check payable to Duxbury Interfaith Council and mail to PO Box 1161, Duxbury, MA 02331.

Assemble Baskets

We are always in need of volunteers. Any amount of time is helpful, and parents are welcome to bring children. Just show up at Holy Family Church the mornings of Thurs., April 13th and Fri., April 14th.

Load and Deliver Baskets

Most of the recipients pick up their baskets. We need help loading the baskets into their cars and making the few remaining deliveries. This takes place Friday afternoon, 4/14, 12:00 noon – 5PM.

Saturday Night 5

Please join us for our 2 services this month. Come explore the "Foolishness of the Gospel" at our April 1st service. On April 15th, we will have a special Holy Saturday vigil. On April 29th, we hope everyone will join us for the Missions Dinner at Camp Wing.

Want to Gather?

By now you should have received your Church Council invitation to attend a "Gathering" to help us begin the transition process to new pastoral leadership. There are three distinct events to give you flexibility of choice from April 2nd to May 7th. Join your fellow members at a Pot Luck Supper, Dessert Coffee or Wine & Cheese event. You can sign up for the event of choice by:

The gatherings start on April 2nd with a Pot Luck Supper in the vestry, so check your calendars and match up a clear date with a Pilgrim Church Gathering soon!

HOLY CONVERSATIONS II

As I write this, Holy Conversations I, a workshop here at Pilgrim piloting for the Massachusetts Conference of the UCC Rev. Richard Peace’s curriculum, to be published this summer on "Holy Conversations", is well underway. If you were a fly on the wall in one of our sessions you’d likely observe – why would anyone call these Christians the "Frozen Chosen"? We’re busy developing our personal repertoires of faith stories – in the first two lessons we’ve been looking at our own lives for stories and finding, often to our amazement, we really DO have stories to tell! And we’re honing these stories by practicing telling them to each other! And we’re enjoying getting to know each other better in the process.

In response to many requests to offer the workshop again, this time in a weekday timeslot, Holy Conversations II has been scheduled. We will be meeting on Tuesdays (May 16th and 30th and June 6th, 13th, and 20th) from 10 – 11:30 AM.

We’d love to have you join us. If you know you will be coming or have questions, please email or phone Lynne Devnew Wolfe. More information on the workshop is also available in the March Pilgrims Progress.

SAVE THE DATES - A WEEKEND CELEBRATING KEN'S MINISTRY!

Save the weekend of June 3rd and 4th to celebrate Ken’s ministry and wish Claudia and Ken well as they begin the next phase in their lives together. Events are still evolving, but we plan to have an informal celebration for the entire church family on Saturday evening, June 3rd and a special retirement service and reception on Sunday morning, June 4th. More information to come! (Let Marlene Biffar, Martha Ball, or Lynne Devnew Wolfe know if you’d like to participate in organizing the activities.)

Might YOU be on a Pilgrim Church Committee?

As we face the challenges and excitement of pastoral leadership transition, the ongoing work of all the groups and committees at Pilgrim Church becomes even more important than usual. Our committees initiate, plan, coordinate and lead most of the activities enabling Pilgrim Church to do God’s work, especially helping us implement our 20/10 Vision with its focus on Spiritual Enrichment, Inreach and Outreach.

At the Pilgrim Church Annual Meeting on May 16th we will elect new officers and committee members. Almost all Pilgrim Church committees have 3 year terms and a third of the committee members are new each year, so there are MANY opportunities to serve. The nominating committee intends to complete the slate of new committee members well before that annual meeting, ideally early in April!

We love to match church members with the boards and committees of interest to them; those they have a passion for or which best use their gifts. And YOU know those interests, passions and gifts better than any of us do! If you think you might like to serve on the Board of Deacons, the Board of Trustees, the Board of Christian Outreach, the Board of Christian Education, the Board of Music, the Flower Committee, the Stewardship Committee, the Pilgrim Childcare & Preschool Board of Directors, the Saturday Evening Service Team, the Memorial Committee, the Parish Nursing Committee, the Endowment Committee, the Adult Fellowship Committee, the Strategic Planning Committee or the Pilgrim Women’s Fellowship Board please:

Please prayerfully consider how you might best contribute your time, talent and passion to Pilgrim Church during this important transition period. Perhaps serving on a Pilgrim Church committee is one of those ways!

STOO FAC

Did you know that there are over 350 lights in the church, vestry, offices and classrooms; many of which are specialty bulbs and need an electrician to change?

Did you know that you contributed over $700.00 and over 750 cans of food to The Souper Bowl of Caring?

MASS TO MISS-MISSION TRIP ’06

On June 24th, 33 of us from Pilgrim Church will join 50+ more people from 2 other South Shore Churches and travel to Jackson, Mississippi. We will be doing hurricane cleanup, re-building and Vacation Bible School for inner city children. Six months after the hurricane hit, there is still much work to be done. There will be plenty left to do this summer.

Resources in the gulf have been depleted. It is our desire to take funds with us to help with the work we are going to do while there. To that end, Lindsay Auer, had the idea to hold a Raffle so that we could raise money for the projects we will work on while we are in Mississippi. She has worked tirelessly to make this happen. There are 2 grand prizes-2 tickets anywhere Southwest Airlines flies or a stay in a condo in Orlando for April Break ‘07. But it doesn’t stop there! We have 50 other fabulous prizes including Red Sox tickets, various gift certificates, a ride in a private jet, ski lift tickets, a golf package at Bretton Woods and much, much more!! Tickets are $10 or 12 for $100. Where else can you support such a worthy cause and have a chance to win marvelous prizes? Tickets will be on sale after Church on Sundays and you can call Eloise at the Church to buy them at other times. If you can take them to sell in your neighborhood or at work, please contact Eloise.

I bet you are wondering when the drawing will be. Well, I’m glad you asked! It will be on APRIL 29TH at the Missions Dinner. The dinner will be at 6pm at Camp Wing. Come for Mardi Gras fun and help the kids raise funds for their trip. How often do you have teens cook for you and serve you a meal? Tickets are $25 and will be on sale at the same time as the raffle tickets. We have fewer of these-so buy early!! Come have fun and support our Mission Trip.

Peace and Grace,

Rev. Eloise
