PILGRIM’S
PROGRESS
October 2006
From the Pastor…..
Dear Friends,
What a wonderful first Sunday at Pilgrim Church of Duxbury! All of you have been so very welcoming and helpful. I look forward to meeting more of you as we partner together in this critical time of transition in the church.
Great Russian novelist Dostoevsky said that “Taking a new step, uttering a new word, is what people fear most.” I think that’s true. The tried and true is more familiar and sure-footed. And yet, we know in our heart of hearts that if we don’t change, we don’t grow. It’s this tension—the fear of change and the desire to grow that presents the paradox inherent in interim ministry. By God’s grace and the church’s call, I have the distinct privilege of partnering with you on this uncharted journey called Intentional Interim Ministry. Ken Landall summed up this paradox best in his last letter published in “Pilgrim’s Progress”: “It’s okay to look lovingly or longingly to the past, but not for too long. God has a new thing in store for each of us…in the future that is right around the bend.”
Many of you have heard during your gatherings with Reverend Dianne Arakawa and Reverend Stephen Washburn that an Intentional Interim is similar and yet different from a Settled Pastor. The most notable difference is that my time with you is limited. The typical stay of an Intentional Interim is two years. The tasks of Interim Ministry are also somewhat different from your Settled Pastor. In addition to leading the worship life of the church, the following are the five tasks of my Interim Ministry among you:
1. Coming to Terms with History: In the same way that people grieve the loss of important people in their lives, congregations grieve their beloved pastors. The Intentional Interim, therefore, helps the church to resolve feelings around their departed pastor and begin to reframe a new beginning.
2. Discovering a New Identity: It’s natural for our identity as a congregation to be stamped by our past pastors. The transition time invites us to discern God’s call and gifting to our congregation in the community. To that end the Intentional Interim Minister leads us into defining our core values and assessing our unique identity.
3. Allowing Needed Leadership Change: Because of the connectional relationship between a pastor and his/her people, changes in pastoral leadership can also precipitate changes in lay leadership. Some long term leaders may take a less active role while new people become more involved. Interim Ministry strengthens lay leadership.
4.
Reaffirming
Connection and Covenant with the
5. Commitment to New Directions in Ministry: Once we have begun the journey to resolve our past and reframe our future, clarified our identity, and strengthened lay leadership and denominational ties, then we become ready to search, call and receive a new Settled Pastor. Then comes the great exchange—from an Intentional Interim to a new Settled Pastor.
With God’s help, this is the journey that you and I will walk together over the next months. Dostoevsky had it right, transition is a fearful thing, but in God’s economy transition is the precursor to transformation. And that can be a very good thing. Do not be afraid or tremble for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you. Deuteronmy 31:6

Bible Study Begins!!!
Come one, come all to our long-standing, long-loved Bible Studies on Wednesday mornings and evenings beginning on October 11. Our morning Bible Study will meet from 10:00AM-11:30AM. And our evening study will meet from 7:30PM-9:00PM. We will be studying the Book of James. James was said to have been called "camel knees" in the annals of church history because of his ministry of prayer. James, believed to be the brother of Jesus, was a practical man with great wisdom whose letter reads a little like the Proverbs of the Old Testament. James, perhaps more than most New Testament books, gives practical advice on "seeking to live as Jesus taught."
Even if you have not attended Bible Study before I encourage you to give it a try. All of us our learners together. Come with your questions. Come with your confusion. No knowledge of the Bible is needed to participate, only a willing heart and a seeking spirit.
If you are interested in coming to this study, please sign up on the designated sheets (morning or evening) on the bulletin board outside of our fellowship hall.

Senior Choir
The Senior Choir
is in need of singers! Space on all parts available!
Requirements: love to sing, can carry a tune (ability to read helpful but
not essential). Benefits: active part in the worship on Sunday and at
special Services, fellowship of very friendly people, night out doing what you
enjoy and praising God twice (he who sings praises God twice - St. Augustus).
We are fortunate to have a very loyal group of volunteers in our choir. Many of
them are away on business or family concerns often. It is helpful to have a
large group of singers so that music at Sunday worship is inspiring regardless
of absentees. SOOO if you fit this profile, please
do join us. You will be happy that you did. If you have any questions, please
do call Cathy Morrison or any member of our choir.

A heart felt "thank you" to everyone of you who helped prepare the parsonage for my coming. It was sparkling clean!! The decorating in both bathrooms was warm and tasteful. And the trees and lawn were all carefully manicured. Your attention to detail made me feel deeply cared for and I will not soon forget such a warm welcome. Thank you all again.
