PILGRIM’S PROGRESS

December 2006

From the Pastor…..

 Dear Friends,

In this month of December we enter the Advent season.  The word advent means “coming.”  Christians around the world celebrate the season of Advent as a time of preparation and reflection of Christ’s birth.  Though the early Christians originally continued the Jewish traditions of celebrating the new year in spring, as time went on they developed traditions of their own.

By the 4th or 5th century, Christmas was established as a religious festival that signaled the beginning of the church year.  It was at this time that those in the Christian church celebrated the birth of God’s Son, Jesus Christ.  In the year 529 Emperor Justinian also declared December 25 as a civic holiday, an action that prohibited any work to be done on that day.  Then in the year 567, the Council of Tours established the season of Advent as a time of fasting preceding Christmas Day.  The council also proclaimed the 12 days from Christmas to Epiphany as a sacred season.

Initially, the Advent period varied from 3 to 7 weeks.  Later it became customary to observe the season for 4 weeks.  This then became the actual beginning of the church year.  Today, we still look to Advent as the beginning of the church year.  Although the dates change from year to year, Advent begins on the Sunday nearest to November 30 and contains the 4 Sundays before Christmas Day.  The season can range anywhere between 23 to 28 days, depending on which day Christmas Eve falls.  Much like the season of Lent, Advent is thought of as a time of penitence and preparation for the coming of the King.

One notable way we anticipate the advent of Jesus Christ in our church service is with the Advent Wreath and the lighting of the candles.  Though there is no historical tradition that I know of regarding the meaning of the candles used in the Advent Wreath, they have come to represent the ever-increasing light of Christ shining into our dark world.  Therefore the attendant themes of the Advent candles have come to symbolize hope, joy, peace and love.

Let us remember Christ’s love this Christmas season.  Jesus said, “There is no greater love than this:  that a person lay down their life for a friend.”  King Jesus comes not only as our Savior, but as our loving friend.  In God’s great love to humankind, Christ came into the world to rescue humankind from our sinful plight and to restore us to sanity through his lavish love.  As we reflect on the meaning of Advent and the great love that God has given in Jesus Christ, may we be moved to love one another in more and more practical ways. “For God so loved the world, he gave…” says the writer of John’s Gospel.  It’s my prayer that rather than looking to receive in this Christmas season, that everyone of us would resolve to give.  May the spirit of Christmas sensitize our hearts to hear the needs of those next to us.  And may the overflowing love of God summed up in the Christ Child  fill us to overflowing that the only reasonable response is to give…and to give…and to give again.

Love came down at Christmas

            Love all lovely, love divine;

Love was born at Christmas,

Star and angels gave the sign.

Worship we the Godhead,

            Love incarnate, love divine

Worship we our Jesus:

            but wherewith for sacred sign?

Love shall be our token,

Love shall be yours and love be mine,

Love to God and to all people

Love for plea and gift and sign.  (Christina Rossetti)

In the Magnificent Love of the Christ of Christmas,

The Reverend Beverly Weinhold

Stephen Ministry

Blue Christmas:  Helping Hurting People Cope with the Holidays

Christmas is a time when we celebrate the birth of Jesus.  It is a time when the expectation is that it will be a joyful celebration.  But for many this is a lonely and dark time.  The Pilgrim Church and our Stephen Ministers will be having a special service December 17 at 3:00 PM in the sanctuary.  Everyone from our community is welcome to attend.  If you or others you know have been dealing with loss, sadness, grief, stress, loneliness and despair, please come join us for this very special service.  We want to make this a time of year where everyone is heard and welcome.

The congregation might be interested in knowing that 21 members of our congregation have received or are receiving care from our Stephen Ministers.  God has called Stephen Ministers to share the congregation’s caregiving ministry with the pastoral staff.  It is one example of spiritual gifts at work within our church.

On Thanksgiving Sunday, our combined choirs; Junior Choir, Pilgrim Ringers, Senior Choir and quartet of Carol Cybulska, Anne Briggs, Steve Johnson, Bob Engel, and our wonderful young singers, Kaitlin Clark, Diana Cybulska and Vivie Doughty provided inspirational music for our Worship service.  We were most fortunate to have the talented Scott Doughty provide trumpet music for us as well.  It was exciting for all of us and based upon the many favorable comments from members of the congregation, it was exciting for them as well.

Don't forget your bells on December 10th!  On this date we will have our traditional "Bell Sunday.”  The Pilgrim Ringers and choirs will sing "bell" music and there will be time for you to ring as well.

On Christmas Eve, a special half hour prelude will begin at 7:30 PM  All of our talented soloists and Choir will provide the music with Worship beginning at 8:00.P.M.   Those of you who attended the Thanksgiving Sunday Service know that this will be worth coming early to hear.  Melissa Toffoloni will enhance the music by playing the French Horn!!  We are all looking forward to that.

It is not too late to join us at rehearsal for the music of Christmas Eve.  Please do consider it.   We would love to have you.

We are also in need of a pianist/organist to play for the Service of Communion at 10:30 PM on Christmas Eve.  If you can do this or know someone who may be willing, please call me at the Church or at home (781-834-4856).  As many of you know, Claudia Landall has done this for us for many years for which we have all been very grateful.  I am sure we would not be successful in persuading her to continue this year!!  Thank you, Claudia for your generosity over the years.

                                                                        Cathleen, Music Director.

Junior choir notes --

Dear singers and parents, it makes me very sad to tell you that Christmas Eve will be my last service as Director of Junior Choir. I have loved every second of our time together and am very sad to be leaving you, but illness in my family has made it difficult to continue. I know that the Music Board is working hard to find the perfect person for you, and I hope that you will ALL continue to make glorious music together. I look forward to seeing and hearing you all in the future! I love you all, and God bless. Sing with Joy!

                                                                                    Beth MacLeod

TO ALL MEMBERS OF PILGRIM CHURCH:

In  accordance with Article IV, Sec. 6 of the By-Laws of Pilgrim Church the Annual Budget Meeting will be held on Sunday, December 17th, immediately following the Closing Hymn in the Sanctuary.  Please note the date chosen for this year’s meeting has been moved due to time issues.  This meeting is open to all members for the purpose of approving the budget.  Any questions or concerns prior to the meeting may be directed to Rod Clark, Pilgrim Church Moderator.                                           Lilly Cleveland, Clerk

From the Collector—

As the year draws to a close, I want to thank all church members for the financial gifts you have made to Pilgrim Church this year.  Many of you whose pledge includes a specific amount earmarked to mission giving have taken the time to specify the appropriate allocation (mission/church operating expenses) with each gift.  This has greatly improved the accuracy of individual accounts and saved many hours of time spent in past years correcting accounts.  I will be closing out 2006 at year end, so please be sure to have any 2006 contributions in the offering or church office by December 31.  In early January you should receive your 2006 giving statements, and if there are any questions at all, please call me at the church office (781/934-6591).
